About

Welcome to Liping’s Deep Learning Garden! Liping is an assistant professor of geographic information science (GIScience) and Computer Science, with a research focus on geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) at the University of New Mexico (UNM).

Prior to UNM, Liping was a postdoctoral research associate in the Information Sciences group (CCS3) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), focusing on computer vision and machine learning algorithm development for technical diagram analysis. Before joining LANL, Liping was a postdoc researcher in the GeoVISTA Center & the Institute for CyberScience at Penn State University, with foci on GIScience and Data Science — specifically, big geospatial data mining using machine and deep learning, plus geovisualization. Liping is passionate about data-driven and big data analytics research, and is an efficient, hard-working, self-motivated researcher and programmer, and a great team player.

A little bit more details about Liping

The four favorite things she has been enjoying doing every day:

  • Programming — communicating with her computer(s), from laptops to servers to HPC clusters, in different languages;
  • Writing — communicating with her (academic + tech) readers on paper and/or on computer screens;
  • Reading — communicating with her (academic + tech) writers;
  • Thinking — communicating with her mind and experience and observations to seek and discover solutions to her research questions…

Why Liping writes this blog

There are so many materials about machine learning, computer vision, and deep learning in the digital ocean. Here, Liping would like to share some materials she thinks really useful for her to understand and grow in machine learning, computer vision, and deep learning. This is a small garden on an island in the big digital ocean about machine learning, computer vision, and deep learning.

Happy Learning!

Acknowledgments

First of all, Liping would like to express her sincere thanks to her postdoctoral mentors, Prof. Alan MacEachren and Prof. Guido Cervone  at Penn State University for their great support to let her delve into machine learning, computer vision, and deep learning areas. Her gratitude also goes to Dr. Subarna Tripathi, Dr Jiasen Lu, Rishabh Jain, Dr. Devi Parikh, Dr. Lingfei Wu, Dr. Rogerio Feris, Dr. Davide Del Vento, Dr. Chul Sung, Dr. Chuck PavloskiProf. Prasenjit Mitra, Dr. Teresa OnoratiDr. Sidd Banerjee, Dr. Nga Thi Thuy Nguyen, Derek MorrTom Canich,  Anderson BanihirweNeal McBurnettScott PezanowskiMorteza KarimzadehXi Liu, Fangcao Xu, Eun-Kyeong Kim, Samuel StehleYanan XinElena Sava, Mehdi Shahriari, Weiming Hu, Yifan Pan, and all other GeoLab members for their advice, discussions, and resources shared with her on her machine learning, computer vision, and deep learning journey.
Also, many thanks go to those bloggers (esp. Jason Brownlee and Andy Thomasand online course instructors (esp. Prof. Andrew Ng) etc. Without them, Liping could not have started with her deep learning garden.

Sharing makes our world brighter and warmer, and makes our life easier!

Liping is indebted to her PhD advisor Prof. Mike Worboys and co-advisor Prof. Kate Beard, as well as her family, who have been hugely supportive throughout her career development and her life.
